5. Thoroughly review the need for a full time town fire department, consider a joint service with East or a part time or volunteer service.

6. Seek to reduce by a significant amount (read hundreds of thousands of dollars) the way in which we provide police coverage. Consider contracting this service to East as a way to reduce cost, and provide a recenue stream to them as a further sign of our support.

7. Move quickly to merge with East and Medway where they are willing, all non essential services that we all provide.

8. Move to cut 20 to 25 percent from the town’s budget for the remainder of this fiscal year in anticipation that we may not receive all of the tax monies due us from GNP in the near or distant future! Ask the school board to consider making the most aggressive cuts that they feel are possible given the current circumstances.

I could go on and on. We have great opportunity to save all taxpayers real dollars, help position the mill for sale and successful operation, and continue to do far more than meet the basic needs for municipal service. While I, like the rest of you, do not like to see anyone lose their job, we are not in the job business, we are in the business of delivering service in an efficient way to our constituents, and that goal should ultimately mesh with our current circumstances to produce an employment and service levels that work for today and tomorrow. We must do our part to give the restart and ongoing operation of these mills the best chance possible for success while at the same time we continue to make this area attractive to new business and a viable home for existing businesses and residents.

I welcome your thoughts and comments and hope that we communicate in a full circle on these and other important issues. If you do not agree with the direction I am taking, please suggest a path that you feel would be more appropriate. I have communicated candidly with all of you my thoughts and as such am fully accountable for them. It will be a real disservice to ourselves and the people we serve if this process is anything but open and honest. At the same time that I respect everyone’s right to disagree with me on all or some of these issues, I will insist on the right to pursue them fully in the spirit of the body to which I am elected as I discharge my duty to the Town of Millinocket. Feel free to share my thoughts or this email with anyone that is a friend of the Katahdin Region and would join us in our efforts to make it an even better place to live and work.

Councilor,
Town of Millinocket

Editor’s Note: The above letter was and is the opinion of the author. The Magic City Morning Star shares the concern, but does not necessarily agree with the proposed solutions.
