Minutement Trump Lynx

Playing at Wentworth Gymnasium, the Stearns Minutemen played to a victory over the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx, posting their first win of the season on Friday, December 21st.

Matt Leino, Derek DiFrederico, and Ian Johnson all scored 2 points during the opening run of the game. Kevin McLaughlin added 5 points on a 3-pointer and a layup. Nate Couiseau scored the only Lynx point from the foul line.  Down 10 points, Lynx coach Ron Weatherbee called a timeout with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Both teams scored 8 points during the rest of the quarter, giving the Minutemen a 19-9 lead.

Stearns added to its lead in the second quarter, leading Mattanawcook 33-23. Kevin McLaughlin and Derek DiFrederico each scored 9 points, and Matt Legassey added 7 more. Tyler Libbey and Jon Carney scored 8 and 7 points, respectively, for the Lynx.

The Mattanawcook Lynx started the third quarter strong, opening on a 13-6 run, coming to within 13 points of a tie with 3 minutes to play in the quarter, prompting Stearns coach Mike Portwine to call for a timeout.

The Minutemen came back in the remaining minutes of the quarter, expanding their lead to 68-48.

The Minutemen and the Lynx each scored 18 points in the final frame as Stearns claimed their first win of the season, 86-66.
