Water System Improvement Investments in Mars Hill and Norway

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that Maine is receiving investments for projects designed to protect public health by improving water quality and public sanitation services. The Mars Hill Utility District is slated to receive a $70,000 loan and a $180,000 grant for wastewater system improvements and a $750,000 grant for water system improvements. The Town of Norway is receiving a $385,000 loan and a $1,105,000 grant for wastewater system improvements.

The Recovery Act funding announced today is being administered by USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program, which provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas. Funding of individual recipients is contingent upon their meeting the terms of the loan or grant agreement.

Congressman Mike Michaud is reported to have said:

• "Maine communities have benefitted greatly by these water system investments. This federal support is essential because Maine's water infrastructure is aging and local budgets are strained. Many communities must repair or replace water infrastructure in order to protect public health and maintain environmental standards. The resources made available today will benefit area residents by creating jobs and making important investments in their water system."
