The Federal
Transit Administration's has announced that Acadia National Park will
receive $1,324,518 to make safety improvements at six bus stops and
maximize ridership and efficiency on the Island Explorer bus system.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), passenger amenities
will include new bus boarding areas, passenger waiting areas,
accessible shuttle fleet service and detailed signage.
"This investment will further improve the visitor experience at one
of the most beautiful parks in the world," said Michaud, a member of the
House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. "The success of
Acadia National Park is so critical to this region, and an improved bus
system will help enhance its positive economic impact."
According to DOT, the Island Explorer has carried 3.7 million
passengers since its inception in 1999. In 2010, it accounted for
150,000 vehicles being removed from the park and public roads.
