PORTLAND -- U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud has been recognized by the Southern Maine Labor Council (SMLC) with their Working Class Hero Award. Fellow Maine Rep. Chellie Pingree and SMLC President Douglas Born presented Michaud with the award at the organization's annual Labor Day Breakfast in Portland.

"I'm incredibly honored to receive this award from the Southern Maine Labor Council. Maine's workforce represents the heart of our communities and the true engine of our economy," said Michaud. "I've never forgotten my roots, and I've never forgotten the importance of using my position in Congress to work for the betterment of all Maine families. I know that by continuing to stand side-by-side, we can keep making meaningful advancements on the issues most important to Maine families."

"We're thrilled to be able to recognize Mike's relentless work on behalf of hardworking Mainers, both union and otherwise," said Douglas Born, SMLC President. "Mike's one of the most reliable voices in Congress for all workers. He understands the importance that men and women who work for a living put on the rights, recognition and respect they deserve and that when workers do well, communities do well."

AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre also attended this morning's breakfast. The Maine AFL-CIO also recognized Michaud with the Working Class Hero Award this year.

During the course of his time in Congress, Michaud has led the Working Families Caucus and the House Trade Working Group. Some of his major efforts around American labor and families include:

Working to strengthen 'Buy America' protections to create jobs at home and boost Maine's domestic manufacturing sector.

Strengthening manufacturing in Maine by securing full compliance with the Berry Amendment -- creating growth opportunities for New Balance to ramp-up production in Maine of American-made athletic footwear. Advocating tirelessly to the Obama administration on behalf of Maine manufacturers to ensure trade negotiations address critical issues such as currency manipulation. Michaud recently addressed a fair trade rally on Capitol Hill, taking a stand against fast-tracking trade authority for a Trans-Pacific Partnership through Congress.

Calling for an increase in the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. Michaud is a co-sponsor of the legislation in the House. Michaud also sponsored legislation raising the minimum wage in Maine during his tenure as Senate President.

Working to extend emergency unemployment benefits for millions of Americans and thousands of Mainers. Michaud has written to House Speaker John Boehner asking him to bring legislation to the House floor that would temporarily extend the critical economic package, and has signed a discharge petition on the legislation.

Supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act so that all Mainers are compensated fairly. Michaud is a co-sponsor of the legislation and also has signed a discharge petition that would require House leadership to bring the bill directly before the House for a vote. Michaud also supported passage of the landmark Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
