Michaud Reacts to State of the Union Address

Congressman Mike Michaud issued the following statement on the President's address this evening before a joint session of Congress. Michaud, who helped lead the bipartisan seating effort again this year, sat with Republican Congressman Howard Coble of North Carolina.

After having conducted a year-long examination of Maine's manufacturers and touring many of them, I strongly support the President's call to do more to boost this critical sector of our economy. One thing he could do right now is require the Defense Department to comply with the Berry Amendment. He wouldn't need Congress to do it, and it would boost manufacturing and job creation in Maine.

But any progress this year and in the years ahead will require changing the way Washington works. Sitting together is nice, but bipartisanship needs to extend to the halls of Congress, committee rooms, floor debate, and beyond.

I join many Mainers in being frustrated with the way leaders in our nation's capitol have conducted business, and it's long past time for a change in how Congress operates. It shouldn't be about scoring narrow political points, but about what's right for the country as a whole.

I believe that we can get there, but it's going to take both sides and the White House working together to accomplish it.
