Americans for Prosperity Foundation Report:
Two weeks ago "Americans for Prosperity Foundation" -- Maine (AFPF-ME) announced the release of a new policy paper on virtual schools titled, "The Great Equalizer: How Online Learning Promises Every Student an Excellent Education." The paper addressed an often-neglected topic of school choice -- the growing amount of online learning programs across the nation.
According to the report, 30 states offer a full-time virtual school on the state level, while 35 states offer a blended learning program for specific courses on the state level. Currently the state of Maine allows districts to conduct online learning but fails to offer parents and students statewide full-time virtual schools or a statewide blended learning program.
"Even though a law was passed in 2011 allowing for the creation of virtual charter schools, none exist yet in the state of Maine. This is disappointing not just as public policy but on a personal level for the parents and students who await the opportunities that virtual schools could provide to them. Online learning empowers our students and parents by providing them with opportunities that might otherwise be unavailable to them in a traditional learning environment while offering our schools an opportunity to expand curricula. Increasing access to online learning can help us make sure our students are receiving the best education possible and are preparing to enter the workplace equipped with the knowledge and skills required to succeed." Carol Weston, AFPF-ME State Director.
