WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Mike Michaud is calling on Speaker John Boehner to bring to the House floor legislation that would extend emergency unemployment benefits for millions of Americans - including 9,000 Mainers. Rep. Michaud sent a letter to Speaker Boehner early this morning following bipartisan passage of the extension through the U.S. Senate last night. Michaud also is co-sponsoring a House companion bill to the Senate-passed extension. Like the Senate version, the House bill Michaud supports would immediately extend emergency unemployment insurance for nearly three million Americans.
"Thousands of Mainers are struggling to pay their mortgages and put food on the table because these critical unemployment benefits have lapsed for months," said Michaud. "Republicans and Democrats agree that restoring these benefits is the right thing to do so that people can meet their financial obligations and maintain a decent standard of living. It's time for Speaker Boehner to bring this legislation to the floor so that we can take action."
