LEWISTON, Maine -- A new report released today shows that by the end of this week, more than 1.6 million Americans will have been cut off from their unemployment insurance, including 4,669 Mainers. Representative Mike Michaud has repeatedly urged congressional leaders to hold a vote on an extension and has supported procedural measures to pass it.
"No wonder congressional approval ratings are at rock bottom. Congressional leaders have turned their backs on workers who lost their job through no fault of their own and are fighting to make ends meet," said Michaud. "Passing an extension must be made a priority and passed as soon as possible. The wellbeing of thousands of Mainers depends on it."
House Republicans have blocked multiple efforts by Democrats to bring up legislation to extend unemployment insurance. Senate Republicans last week voted to block legislation to extend the benefit, including a paid for 11-month extension.
