WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Mike Michaud has announced that twelve Maine airports will collectively receive more than $3.3 million from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Grant Program. Bangor International Airport received the largest share of funding at approximately $1.4 million. Grant funds will be used for a wide variety of projects aimed at improving airport infrastructure, safety, efficiency, and traveler experience.
"I applaud the FAA for making these critical investments in Maine's airports. It will allow airports throughout the state to make much-needed improvements," said Michaud. "There is no question that investing in our transportation infrastructure creates jobs. These funds will help to make air travel in Maine more reliable, make our airports more efficient and secure, and improve safety for the traveling public."
The grants include:
Bangor International: Rehabilitate Taxiway - $270,000 - This grant will fund the design phase of a project to rehabilitate the existing taxiway pavement that has reached the end of its useful life.
Bangor International: Rehabilitate Apron - $80,000 - Rehabilitation of the apron is needed to maintain structural integrity of the pavement. This grant will fund the design phase.
Bangor International: Modify Terminal Building - $600,000 - This grant will provide funding to replace the public address system in the domestic terminal building that has reached the end of its useful life.
Bangor International: Install Runway Sensors - $449,346 - This grant will fund the replacement of the runway condition sensor system which has exceeded its useful life.
Belfast Municipal: Update Airport Master Plan Study -- $138,000 - This grant will fund Phase II of the Update Airport Master Plan Study. Phase II of the Update Airport Master Plan Study will examine alternative runway designs, airspace analysis, and other required improvements to meet the needs of the more demanding aircraft.
Caribou Municipal: Update Airport Master Plan Study - $150,000 - This grant will fund an update to the existing master plan to help identify future airport needs.
Hancock County-Bar Harbor: Install Miscellaneous NAVAIDS, Light Obstructions - $300,000 - The project will replace obstruction lights and poles that have exceeded their useful life. These obstruction lights are located in the Runway 22 transitional surfaces and provide funding to install wind cones to improve aircraft visual guidance and enhance safety of aircraft movements.
Pittsfield Municipal: Update Airport Master Plan Study - $150,000 - This grant will fund an update to the Airport Master Plan narrative report and Airport Layout Plan to address key issues, objectives and goals pertinent to the airport's future development.
Steven A. Bean Municipal: Install Perimeter Fencing, Install Runway Vertical/Visual - $200,000 - This grant will fund the installation of precision approach path indicators on the runway and the installation of runway end identifier lights. The system will make the airport more accessible to pilots by providing improved approaches to the runway ends. The grant will also provide for the installation of a perimeter fence and gates will deter unauthorized persons and vehicles from entering onto the airfield.
Central Maine Airport of Norridgewock: Acquire Snow Removal Equipment - $150,000 - Acquisition of snow removal equipment, carrier vehicle with plow, will keep the airport serviceable during snow periods and aid in the efficiency and safety of operations.
Greenville Municipal: Environmental Mitigation - $225,000 -- This grant will allow for the construction of a stormwater treatment area to meet the Maine Department of Environmental Protection permit requirements.
Dewitt Field, Old Town Municipal: Conduct Environmental Study - $50,000 - This grant will fund an Environmental Assessment to evaluate environmental issues related to the proposed removal of obstructions to the runway approach.
Sugarloaf Regional: Acquire Land for Development - $130,000 - This grant will provide for the acquisition of one parcel of land needed for future airport development.
Eastport Municipal: Install Weather Reporting Equipment - $150,000 -- This grant will provide for the installation of an automatic weather observing system to enhance the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations at the airport by providing accurate, current, and site-specific weather information.
Northern Maine Regional Airport at Presque Isle - $300,000 - The rehabilitation of the runway is needed to maintain structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris. This grant will fund crack sealing for the entire runway and pavement markings for the runway, taxiway system, and apron.
