$1.8 Million in Funding for Assessment & Cleanup of Brownfield Sites across 2nd District

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Mike Michaud announced this morning $1.8 million in funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directed at a number of brownfield sites across Maine. The funding covers assessment and planning for future use of brownfield sites, as well as cleanup of sites. Regions across the district receiving the EPA funding are:

  • Bangor - $400,000 for community-wide assessment
  • Belfast - $200,000 for cleanup of Maskers Theater/Thompson Wharf
  • Congress Street Hill Property, LLC (Belfast) - $200,000 for cleanup of the Old Waldo County Jail
  • Hancock County Planning Commission - $400,000 for community-wide assessment
  • Northern Maine Development Commission - $200,000 for community-wide assessment
  • Washington County Council of Governments - $400,000 for community-wide assessment

"I'm pleased that so many communities across our district will benefit from this investment in transforming brownfields," said Michaud. "Maximizing the potential of these sites will benefit our region in many ways -- it bolsters local economies, prioritizes the safety and well-being of our residents and ensures that these types of locations can positively contribute to a community's sustained growth. I look forward to seeing the results of these assessment and clean-up projects."

$125,000 Safety Grant to North Lakes Fire & Rescue

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- North Lakes Fire & Rescue today received a nearly $125,000 operations and safety grant from FEMA's Awards for Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The funding will go toward self contained breathing apparatuses. Congressman Mike Michaud issued the following statement:

"Our emergency first responders put their lives on the line every single day for those in our local communities, and they do so without ever asking for anything in return. This funding will ensure our fire fighters have the equipment they need to effectively -- and safely -- respond to emergency situations. We have a duty to keep our first responders safe, and I'm pleased that this funding will help do just that."
