WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud has announced that the Eastern Maine Development Corporation has received a grant of more than $187,000 from the Economic Development Administration (EDA). The grant will go toward development of a strategic plan to assess the economic impact of the loss of major rail services and paper production businesses. The ultimate goal of the project is to attract private investment and spur job growth throughout the region.

"This is an important investment that will allow areas of Maine that have been particularly hard-hit in recent times to put a plan in place that will create more favorable conditions for new investment and, ultimately, job growth," said Michaud. "Maine is full of hard-working, passionate and highly skilled people -- they are our number one asset. This investment will allow us to strengthen our communities and strengthen the livelihood of Mainers."

"The award from the EDA is a recognition of the challenges faced by the Penobscot-Piscataquis Counties region of Lincoln, Milo and Millinocket. It also gives us the encouragement and confidence to seek out opportunities to build upon the natural resources and workforce assets of the region," said Michael Aube, President of the Eastern Maine Development Corporation. "Building partnerships of communities, institutions and workforce will make use of these funds to develop and design strategies that advance our economic options."
