The Maine Games is the official state games of the Pine Tree State. As a member of the National Congress of State Games, the Maine Games offers Maine amateur athletes of all ages and abilities the opportunity to compete in a statewide sports festival, practice good sportsmanship, and share in the camaraderie special to athletics. Operating as a non-profit organization, the Maine Games is funded by sponsors, private donations, and participation fees.
SACO -- On Sunday, September 10, hundreds of runners of all shapes, sizes, and abilities will take off from two start lines at the beach between Pine Point, in Scarborough, and Camp Ellis, in Saco, to run in the first Saco Bay 5 & 10k races along the hard-packed sandy beach which stretches nearly 7 miles.

Both races are scheduled to kick off at 8:00 a.m. and runners will be able to enjoy one last trip to the beach after the tourists have departed for the summer.

The races are being put on as a joint effort of the communities of Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach and Saco, and with the assistance of the Maine Games. Proceeds will benefit recreation programs in all three communities as well as the Maine Games, our state’s own Olympic-style sports festival.

Runners of all ages are eligible to take part and families are encouraged to register together to compete.

Awards to the top three finishers in each age/gender group include Maine Games gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as qualification for the 2007 State Games of America, to be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, next August. These races are the official 5k and 10k races of the Maine Games, and as such will serve as the exclusive qualifiers for the 2007 State Games of America 5k race to be run in the shadow of Pike’s Peak.

The Saco Bay 5 & 10k races will be run nearly entirely on the beach but will briefly skip up to a bridge on Seaside Ave. over Goosefare Brook between Ocean Park and Saco.

The 10k will begin at Pine Point and the 5k will begin just south of the pier. The finish line for both races will be at Camp Ellis, near the mouth of the Saco River.
