Maine Games: State Powerlifting Championships, Basketball

BREWER/WATERVILLE -- The Maine Games State Powerlifting Championships are being held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, at the Brewer Auditorium. This is the third year for this event which always provides strong competition for lifters of all ages.  Over 65 athletes have registered for this event so far, and registrations will be accepted at the event.

Saturday’s event is an unsanctioned meet, where athletes will compete in a clean meet. Random drug-testing will be conducted following the competition. Sunday’s meet is sanctioned by the USA Powerlifting, and is also be a clean meet. All lifters on Sunday must be members of USAPL. Memberships can be purchased at the event.
  
This year’s meet include two of last year’s strongest females in Maine. Teenager, Randi Kaplan, of Embden, and Ginny Brockway, of Waterville, will be competing. Both women were named Female Lifters of the Meet for the sub-Open category and the Open category, respectively. Also mother and daughter team, Benita and Becca Deschaine, of Bangor will be on hand to defend their two-time gold medal performances.
  
Michael Kalter, of Saco will be defending his Maine Games record lifts, including a dead lift of 718 pounds in 2005.
  
The Maine Games represents the first powerlifting competition for some athletes, while other veterans of the sport return year after year to share in the competition and sportsmanship of the event.
  
The doors open at 9:00 a.m. each day. Admission fees are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years of age.
  
This meet is sponsored in part by Union Street Athletics, in Bangor; LA Training, in Bangor, and the USA Powerlifting Team Boosters, and the Black Bear Inn, of Orono.
  
To register for this meet please be at the venue by 8:00 a.m. on the day you wish to lift. Saturday’s meet is non-sanctioned and does not require a membership to the USAPL. Sunday’s meet is a sanctioned meet and does require USAPL membership. Both meets are clean and random drug testing will be administered.

9th & 10th Grade Girls & Boys Basketball Tournaments Shaping Up

This is the first year for basketball in Maine Games.

The Maine Games State 9th and 10th Grade (2006-2007 school year) Basketball Championships are being held on Sunday, June 24, at the Alfond Youth Center, in Waterville.

The tournaments are a part of the Maine Games sports festival in Waterville June 22-24.

Registrations for these tournaments begins April 1 and will close as soon as the six-team tournaments are filled.

To register a team for the boys or girls tournament go to www.mainegames.org and download the registration form and mail it with the registration fee of $225 to the Maine Games. The registrations are being taken on a first come, first served basis. All tournaments will close when filled and without further notice.

The Maine Games 9th and 10th Grade Boys and Girls State Basketball Championships being run by commissioner Sean Casey, of Orono.
