BREWER -- The Maine Games has announced that the 2007 State Powerlifting Championships will again be held at the Brewer Auditorium, at 318 Wilson Street, on March 24-25.

Athletes as young as 12 and as old as in their 70s will again register to prove their strength and lifting skills at this two-day meet. Lifters have the option of competing in their age/weight class in the Sub-Open meet on Saturday, March 24, or in the Open meet which is divided by the lifter's weight only. For an addition fee, athletes can register for both meets, and only lift on Saturday and have their results carried over to the Open meet.

As in the past, Maine's strongest men, women, and teens will be on hand for this event and several state records in many divisions are expected to fall again this year.

It is expected that there will again be several families competing, as last year's event saw three mother/daughter pairs, and several father/son or father/daughter combinations as well.

Team scores will also be kept with gyms registering ten or more lifters. Last year's Maine Games State Team Champions, Gilly's Gym, of Waterville, will be on hand to defend their title. It is expected they will have strong competition from Union Street Athletics, of Bangor, among others for the banner and traveling team trophy.

Registrations are now being accepted for this meet and athletes are encouraged to register early to save on the meet fee. The registration fee increases on March 1, and again on March 10. Athletes can register at the meet for this event, however the registration fees are doubled for those who procrastinate.

This meet is being hosted by the Brewer Recreation Department, the Union Street Athletic Boosters, and LA Training, of Bangor.

For more information contact the Maine Games at 207-284-2003, or visit the Maine Games website at www.mainegames.org.

Other events such as track and field, wrestling, swimming, field hockey, 5k, golf, taekwondo, and more are scheduled for the weekend of June 22-24, in the Greater Waterville area. Check the website for details.
