Last Wednesday was the night that all the candidates who were running for office had the chance to tell the people why they were running.
Marty Cyr, the candidate that is running to be another voice for the economical development organization called the Millinocket Area Growth and Investment Council (MAGIC), told the people of Millinocket to put their money where their mouth is.
After five years and almost a million dollars spent, with little accountability, some of the people are asking questions what MAGIC has done for Millinocket.
One of the new businesses they claim to have helped was the Community Press get a loan. By getting a loan for a new paper, the result was a mass walkout from the Katahdin Times, and then later both papers merged. One of the reasons given for the merger was that there wasnít enough business for two papers, so can you tell me again why the Community Press was started and how this helped the community? Besides, wasn't that a local loan, funded by the taxpayers of Millinocket?
Anyone seeing the Community Press (now Katahdin Press) in the last two years around election time knows that answer. The only candidates and issues which are promoted are the ones that support MAGIC. There are no questions asked, only the news that this organization wants you to have.
No paper for Millinocket, but the stakeholdes of MAGIC have their own newspaper, while other news and candidates are left out. MAGIC helped to kill a paper that had been around for many years, getting the taxpayers of Millinocket to pay for it, and they call that one of their successes.
We need a new tax base to replace the mill. Maybe we need annexation and an industrial park, but that is something MAGIC never promoted.
We need someone whose main goal would be to get new business in town, not just tourism. We need to spend our money wisely and we need results that will help this town by keeping our younger generation here.
Fifty thousand dollars to fix an elevator in a building that was leased; we did get that money back before it was spent, but even the idea of it was silly. Brim Ness: no jobs, money gone and the taxpayers are responsible to pay that loan back, to the amount of $250,000 dollars.
We need the people of Millinocket to read MAGICís report and to see what they claim as successes. Study the report and make your own judgment. It is some of your tax money that was spent.
We need the people of Millinocket to put honesty above the charming liars; character does count but too many times the people consider what they are told to be the truth, and ignore the real truth that they need to hear, while good, honest men are not appreciated.
An honest person will tell us what we need to know, not what they want us to hear to get elected; but in Millinocket too many of the people do not want to know what is going on and that has been our downfall.
We do need an economic developer. We will have to spend money to do it, but after five years we need to ask, "Is MAGIC the organization to do it, and should they be the only organization that gets all the money from Millinocket?
Time is running out and instead of destroying the messenger, read the message and takes a good look at what is happening to your community.
I will be voting no to more funding for MAGIC and I will be voting for candidates who are honest and who will try their best to serve the people of Millinocket, not the ones that will only serve what is the best interest of an organization called MAGIC.
