So there you have it. Next time someone says to you that Chinese students are brilliant, just remember that they are stereotyping! (Story and acknowledgments inside)

I was sent this photograph in an email and there is a tag on the bottom which indicates that the original photo can be Found Here.

I've posted the photograph here today for a reason. Today, (Sunday), is actually a working day (8 classes) after a 3 day (busy break) for QingMing Festival, and I am publishing late and hadn't pre-prepared a photo of the week so decided to use this because of what happened in class today.

In every class you have students constantly text messaging but I have one class of first year students who definitely, surely, absolutely are NOT doing well in their current round of tests. They didn't do their homework; they didn't prepare for the list of questions that I handed out, and they don't listen to other students answering their questions in the classroom and as a consequence they are failing.

At the break today I text messaged my coordinator and providing the class number, said that I wanted to commit suicide. She wrote back that all the teachers felt the same way with this class.

When I went back into the classroom I shouted at the students and told them to turn off their phones. They have never heard me scream at them before. I then lectured them for 5 minutes and then gave them dictation for 40 minutes, because it is hard to text message at the same time you are doing dictation.

So there you have it. Next time someone says to you that Chinese students are brilliant, just remember that they are stereotyping!
