Photograph of the Week: A Surprise for the Teacher

These photographs may not appear to be very special but to me they represent one aspect of why I love living in China. These photographs were taken in my apartment on Christmas night, Wednesday 25th 2013. The four boys that might appear to you to look like Santa's Helpers, are in fact some of my 'first-year' college students.

These boys have some difficulty in speaking English, and so every Monday afternoon we do a special remedial class to bring them up to speed. On Monday they asked me if they could come to my home on Tuesday night and cook me a Christmas dinner, but as I had commitments with the school that evening, I agreed to the alternative time on Wednesday evening.

After my sixth period for the day, I went home, tidied my apartment and waited for the boys to come and cook dinner. They had already told me that they would go to the vegetable and meat market on the way to my place. What they didn't tell me was that they also went to order 'Peking Duck' from a restaurant, and additionally went to buy a Christmas Tree and other decorations.

When they arrived they turned my house upside down with Christmas merriment, for which I am extremely grateful. It was my best Christmas in a long time.

Wishing all our readers a Happy New Year
