WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Coalition for Recreational Trails last night. Michaud has been a longtime advocate for Maine's more than 14,000 miles of trails, and has worked closely with the Coalition over the course of his time in Congress.

"The Recreational Trails Program has been central to improving our trail systems -- providing a better, safer experience for hikers, bikers, skiers and snowmobilers across Maine," said Michaud. "In Maine, the outdoors is a part of our heritage and a part of our economy. The Recreational Trails Program does incredible work, and I am honored by this recognition. Over the coming weeks and months, I'll continue working to ensure this critical program gets the funding it deserves -- I believe this is a great example of the type of bipartisan effort that everyone can unite behind."

Last year, Michaud worked with the Rails to Trails Conservancy to launch online maps and information on Maine's recreational trails. He's also led multiple bipartisan efforts over the years to ensure continued funding for the Recreational Trails Program, and will continue to do so this year as Congress considers a new highway funding bill.

The Recreational Trails Program provides funds to states to develop and maintain trails for both non- motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. RTP is funded through the fuel taxes collected from non- highway users such as snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, ensuring that the individuals who pay those taxes also benefit from the program.
