MILLINOCKET / LAS VEGAS, NV -- John Joseph Conley, 81, died on Monday, March 26, 2007, in Las Vegas, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born January 27, 1926, in Portland, the son of John J. and Margaret (Slane) Conley.
He attended schools in Portland and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS South Dakota from 1943 to 1945, in the European and Pacific theatres of war. He was employed at General Motors Corp., Panorama City, Calif., and later employed at Great Northern Paper Co., Millinocket, for 31 years, retiring in 1986. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket and Rodney Stinson Post No. 4154, VFW, Millinocket. John was an avid sports fan, finally being able to see his beloved Red Sox win the World Series in 2004. He was also a Little League coach for many years. Anyone who knew John will remember how much he loved to sing and entertain. He was a member of the Millinocket Players for a number of years and was also a past president.
He is survived by his wife, Lesa of Las Vegas; and the mother of his children, Constance (Clowes) Conley of Millinocket; four children, all of Millinocket: Leanna Grant and her husband, Merle, Jody Salmen, Sherry Burks and Michael Conley; and a stepson, John Karapondo of Las Vegas. Bumpa John will be missed by his six grandchildren: Lori Shaver and her husband, Jim, of Prospect, Justin Grant and Erin Salmen of Millinocket, Derek Salmen, Heather Burks and Ryan Burks, all of Colorado; two stepgranddaughters: Sara Cummings and Amber Glidden; three great-grandchildren: Spencer and Abby Yeo of Prospect, and Tyler Salmen of Colorado; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret, in 1990; and two sisters: Teresa Smith and Mary Crozier.
