People's Referendum to Overturn Gay Marriage Law, Enacted by Legislature, and Permit People to Decide the Issue

As you may know, the Legislature recently determined to change Maine laws so as to permit same-sex marriage. An amendment was proposed to bring the matter to a vote of the people, as might be expected considering the historic significance of such a legislation, but the Legislature chose not to give their consituents a voice in the issue, and opted to pass it into law, a law that Governor Baldacci signed without hesitation.

A People's Veto Referendum is underway, seeking to overturn this law, so that the Maine people - not the Legislature - might be able to determine the status of marriage within the State of Maine. My wife and I are among the many circulators of this petition, and will have them available at our home - at 146 Katahdin in Millinocket, Maine - for anyone who would like to sign this petition.

Petitions be available for signing outside of the transfer station in Millinocket tomorrow, Saturday, June 6, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and later if there are people waiting to sign the petition, and will probably be there on additional days to be scheduled later.

If you live outside of Millinocket, or within Millinocket, and would like to sign this petition on another date, please feel free to contact me. I am willing to drive a reasonable distance, particularly if there are a group of people who would like to sign the petition, and will take care of the matter of having your signatures validated by the appropriate town clerks. If not me, then I will put you in touch with one of the organizers or someone else who will be able to make the petition available to you. Perhaps there is already someone who has signed on to circulate the petition in your area; but if not, someone will be in touch with you.

However you might ultimately vote on this issue if we are able to get it to a ballot, I am confident that most of you will agree that a significant change in our marriage laws should be made by the people of Maine, not by the Legislature and governor alone.

Where: Millinocket Transfer Station
When: Saturday, June 6, 2009 from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
