Grade Inflation and Reality Testing
Nicholas Stix represents an article that he originally published on May 11, 2001: The reason is that things are much worse in academia than even its brand-name critics are aware of. In a debate, opposing scholars come up with conflicting data, and argue about why their respective data fail to match, or give mutually irreconcilable interpretations to generally accepted data. But no one is even providing data for a grade inflation debate.

Remembering Richard Jewell

This is the story of Richard Jewell, the hero who saved countless lives, and of Ray Cleere, the first of many heels who sought to railroad him for another man's crime.

GOP’s 50-Year Reich Collapses!
Geniuses George W. Bush and Karl Rove had the attitude that their Republican and conservative base (aka "the suckers") had no choice but to vote GOP. Such arrogance resulted in Bush and Rove having a rude, 1992-style awakening.

Domestic Terrorism: The Nation of Islam and the Zebra Murders
An ominous anniversary just passed – that of the Zebra Murders. From 1970-1974, the Nation of Islam earned the title of the bloodiest domestic terrorist group in American history, as it murdered as many as 270 whites in California alone.

A Letter to a Daughter of the American Revolution
On October 5, Andrea Clemons, who identified herself as a Los Angeles high school science teacher, published an article in the Intellectual Conservative, entitled, “A Daughter of the American Revolution Speaks Out Against Bush.” Quoting from the Declaration of Independence, Clemons demanded that President George W. Bush be removed from office, and implied that violent means be employed. She did not specify parliamentary means. My response follows.

Is T.O. Bipolar?
After all-pro Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens' reported suicide attempt Tuesday night, don’t be surprised if we hear of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (aka manic-depression) in his case. Owens has long been known to be a maniac; indeed, he has gotten much more press over the years for his obsessively attention-seeking acting out than he has for his spectacular receptions and runs after catches. Some lowlights follow; many more have been catalogued by James Alder, and some videos that would embarrass a sensible person may even be seen at Owens’ own official Web site.

Bruno Kirby: Rest in Peace, Pal
The moral of the Bruno Kirby-Billy Crystal story is, never disagree with your "best friend" in Hollywood, if you’re the second banana, and he’s the star and the producer. Apparently, what Harry Truman said about friendship in Washington, applies to Hollywood, as well: "If you want a friend ... get a dog."

"Ethics Expert" Judge Can’t Stop Lying
Maybe we ought to make jurists wear see-through robes. There’s something about the combination of wearing a black robe, sitting high above the rest of us, and being addressed as an institution ("the court"), that tends to go to judge’s heads. Columnist Jimmy Breslin once asked why, in a democracy, everyone should have to rise when a judge enters a courtroom

Bring Out the Hellman’s, and Bring out ... Less?
It’s a dark day in the world of mayonnaise. Companies are faced all the time with the dilemma: Raise prices or cut content? Sometimes they choose one, and sometimes the other. But never both! Or so it was until now, with the folks at Hellman's Mayonnaise.

Is It Time to Play Taps for The American Conservative?
During the last few days, a number of sources in and close to The American Conservative (TAC) magazine variously informed me that TAC is shutting down imminently; that TAC’s bosses are sending out mixed signals, and will shut down soon, if their present fevered search for "angels" is unsuccessful; and that TAC will shut down in the fall, at the latest. ("Angels" - my word, not theirs - is Broadway slang for backers.)

Seven Days in May: Rumsfeld and the Generals
Imagine that a cabal of top officers is conspiring to mutiny and topple civilian control of the military in the United States of America. If it sounds like a movie, it’s because it already is one – John Frankenheimer’s 1964 political thriller, Seven Days in May.

Eliot Spitzer: Vote for Me: I Love Illegals!
Shame on NY AG Eliot Spitzer for demagoguing, lying about the law, abusing the powers of his office, and violating employers' legal right to fire workers who refused to show up for their regular work shifts on May 1. The law in question was enacted to protect legal workers, not illegal immigrants. And the law did not give workers a right to skip work.

Miss Peggy Lee & Co.
On Monday, Harry Smith interviewed Peter Richmond on CBS This Morning. Richmond was flogging his new bio, Fever: The Life and Music of Miss Peggy Lee. Hearing him talk passionately (and fast – he knows you don’t get all day on these shows!) about her, and seeing a pic of Miss Lee and Mr. Sinatra, in which she looked more fetching I had ever seen her, I got chills.

John Kass: It’s a Wonderful, Liberal Life
"At least taxpayers know something about taxes: Every time taxes are raised, a liberal gets his wings." That was in a column on the self-righteous, freshly convicted husband, Robert Creamer, of Illinois Democrat U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky. That would be Robert Creamer, “the noted champion of the poor and the downtrodden,” as Kass, dripping sarcasm, repeatedly reminds us.

New Orleans Police Department: When Cops Loot, It’s Not Looting
