A couple of years ago, one of Dr. Louis Hutchinson III's daughters came down the stairs armed with something that every parent should be familiar with: a Christmas list of "what she needed" as gifts that year.

Dr. Hutchinson detected the perfect teaching moment. A facilitator of various charitable actions via Restore Together, a foundation extending the ability of the church, help organizations, government, corporations and individuals to provide care, advocacy and services, he turned the table as only a father can, and asked his daughter to come up with a plan on how to provide gifts to others who "needed" them.

From that, an annual coat drive was born. On Friday night December 27, 2013 invited guests approximately 100 -- 150 (many youth) will gather at the Hutchinson home to assemble items for the homeless, including food bags, coats, clothing, toiletry items, assistance information. Guests will partake in eating, laughing, fellowship, and more importantly the annual dessert making/eating contest. On the following morning, Saturday the 28th many of the guests will gather at the Hutchinson home to load their cars and trucks with the assembled items. These guests receive a warm breakfast and instruction in preparation for the caravanned Journey to downtown Washington DC (at a park 3 blocks away from the White House) to feed, counsel and assist hundreds of homeless individuals and families. Hundreds of those that are socially conscious through social media are expected to attend.

Dr. Louis J. Hutchinson III is the Senior Pastor of Restoration Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, MD. He also serves through his "tent ministry" as an Officer and Vice President of the Public Sector & Energy Efficiency Practice for Constellation Energy, an Exelon Company (NYSE: EXE). Dr. Hutchinson is a member of the Association for Climate Change Officers. He is also a member of the Executive Leadership Council, which is the preeminent organization that recognizes the strengths, contributions, and impact of African American corporate business leaders in Fortune 500 organizations. Dr. Hutchinson holds a Doctorate in Theological Studies, magna cum laude, and a Master of Divinity Degree, summa cum laude, both from Wesley Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science and Statistics from The George Washington University.

There is an all-out assault on the poor. And that assault is global, systemic, digital, immoral and effective. And the church, whose responsibility it is to advocate for the poor, is in a collective slumber. There is a Digital Secularization -- the immoral use of technology that exploits the people, systems, and the social and natural environment across the world -- in need of a humanizing, moral revolution. These factors and many others conjoin to make these very trying, desperate, and difficult times for the poor and especially the growing numbers of urban poor of all ethnic and racial groups.
