Recently Governor Baldacci addressed the people in his annual State of the State Address. As much as I applaud his efforts to lead our State, I am forced to conclude his efforts will prove worse than futile.
All actions are based on understanding; and understanding is always a matter of perspective. If a man’s perspective in life is economic, he will see the world in economic terms. If a man’s perspective is spiritual, he will see the world in spiritual terms. The Governor, like every other politician in our state, sees the life of our state in economic terms. Small wonder, since our government exists to do just that - divide up the economic pie.
Thus, the Governor focused once again on just how much money will be needed to give the people of Maine a happy life. But the real state of the State escaped notice; and that is the rapid transformation of our State into the opposite of everything it once was.
The best minds in Maine say we are rapidly being transformed from a rural state with traditional Yankee values, into an urbanized conglomeration with all the troubles of our neighbors to the south. Should we ban hunting? Introduce a National Park? Legalize same sex marriage? Use legalized gambling to balance the budget? Allow the expansion of the Racino? All these problems are symptoms of an underlying spiritual disease, a disease spread by those who want to transform a highly moral Christian society into an economic bazaar where the only matter of importance is the bottom line.
Yes, that is correct - the driving force behind the demise of Maine is greed. Many are profiting from our decline - the gambling industry, the liquor industry, and the hordes of lawyers and lobbyists in Portland, Bangor and Augusta! There is no other way to put it.
Thanks to Governor Baldacci, and those like him, Maine will soon disappear. And that is the real truth about the state of our State.
