Michael Armstrong wrote: "The ancient Romans had a tradition: whenever one of their engineers constructed an arch, as the capstone was hoisted into place, the engineer assumed accountability for his work in the most profound way possible: he stood under the arch."
Today there is zero accountability admitted by the clerics of Islam for the atrocities committed by Muslims around the world. Whenever critics connect the religion of Islam with the egregious behaviour of Muslim terrorists, there are those who immediately go into action to silence these critics.
A most recent example of this undemocratic censure is the cancellation of Pamela Geller's speaking engagement at a Chabad synagogue in the city of Toronto, Canada. The Rabbi who had offered his synagogue as a venue for Pamela Geller's presentation, who also serves as a chaplain for the York Regional Police, was visited by members of the force's race relations team and told that if he allowed Pamela Geller to speak at his synagogue, they would have to "reconsider" his position as chaplain. Heaven forbid someone should touch on the subject of anti-Jewish hatred existing within the Muslim community, and Heaven forbid the facts of this dark reality should be promulgated within the Jewish community.
Shortly after 9/11, President Bush stated, "The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace." With all due respect, I think that by now, so many years after 9/11 and so many terrorist attacks later, the observers of Islam and the Muslim world would disagree with Mr. Bush's propitious summation of Islam and the Muslim mindset toward the Western world. What is truly amazing to me is that, through it all, Islam the religion is never connected to these exclusively Muslim crimes. The fact that Muslims, at the behest of their religious sensitivities, have been committing these atrocities seems to have escaped the attention of the Western media like water off a duck's back.
Jewish settlers (so called by the same Western media) are always referred to as "Jewish" settlers. Fundamentalists of the southern United States are always referred to as "Christian" fundamentalists, so why not Muslim terrorists as "Muslim" terrorists? If terrorism is committed by Muslims in accordance with what they perceive as Islam's commandments, why are these violations of Western laws not construed as religious inspiration emanating directly from Islam? Zionism is an integral part of Judaism, and it is readily excoriated in the press every day; prohibition against homosexuality is an integral part of Christianity, and this edict has been thoroughly harangued in major newspapers for decades now.
Violence against Jews can be found prescribed numerously in the Quran and has been a part of Islam's history since the time of the Prophet Mohammed, but to draw such a connection publicly is now deterred, ironically, by either threat of violence or by legal action. The question should be asked: Why is the religion of Islam conceded such a comfortable inadvertence while other religions are zealously scrutinized?
The German historian Norbert Frei recounts that between 1933 and 1939, many of the German population "with astonishing rapidity...identified with the social will to construct a Volksgemeinschaft (a racially unified and hierarchically organized body) that kept any thoughtful or critical stance at arm's length." It would appear that the present designs of the Left and the Multiculturalists are to advance a similar society that also keeps "any thoughtful or critical stance at arm's length." Islam the religion, in this exclusionist society, is not to be maculated by the crimes of its past, present or future. All criticism of the Muslim extremist is not to be connected to "the religion of peace." Islam has become the Teflon religion.
