LEOMINSTER, MA -- For the fourth year in a row, the Maine Elks Association Ritual Team, won the Area I Interstate-Relations Ritual Roulette Championships, held at the Leominster Elks Lodge #1237, in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 19, 2004. The purpose of this contest is to promote excellence in the performance of the Elks initiation ritual, and to foster better relations among the State Elks Associations.
Five teams from across New England and New York competed in this unique event, which involves four of the seven officers drawing for their ritual parts only 5 minutes before their team competes. This is extraordinarily difficult, as those four officers must memorize four parts, including the position of Exalted Ruler, Leading Knight, Loyal Knight, and Lecturing Knight positions.
Once the four chair officers are determined, the team must perform before several judges, who evaluate them on Impressiveness, Pronunciation, Word Accuracy, Deportment (movements), and Appearance. Deductions are made for each mistake, starting with a perfect score of 100 points and working downward. The team from Maine earned an almost perfect score 97.9421 points, edging out New Hampshire, who finished in second place.
Earning recognition as Area I Champions are: Exalted Ruler: Joe Marquis (Bath), Leading Knight: Rick Williams (Biddeford-Saco), Loyal Knight: Bruce Brunelle (Sanford), Lecturing Knight: Tom Spellman (Sanford), Esquire: Roger Normandeau (Sanford), Chaplain: Wayne Cotterly (Lewiston), Inner Guard: Floyd Howes (Biddeford-Saco), Candidate: Robert Drisko (Augusta), and Coaches: Phil O'Brion (Farmington), Harry Desjardins (Biddeford-Saco), and Justin Ingersoll (Bath).
In addition to winning the overall team competition, several individual awards were earned as well. These awards were presented to: Rick Williams, Bruce Brunelle, Tom Spellman, Wayne Cotterly, Floyd Howes, and Robert Drisko for achieving the highest scores in their respective chairs above. Cotterly achieved the highest individual score in the competition with a 95.969 out of 100 as Chaplain.
