"Come on Whiskers," Peyton said as she gathered Wiskers up from his basket. Wiskers opened his eyes and looked at her. "What's going on?" he asked himself. "I was minding my own business and now she wants me to do something." He curled himself over Peyton's shoulder and fell back asleep. Hearing the sleepy kitten make a soft snoring sound in her ear, Peyton laughed. "Oh Wiskers, you really are such a sleepy head." She stroked him softly and carried him out the door. She carefully laid him down in a big yellow basket and started off down the street. She walked until she came to an intersection and then she stopped and waited for the light to change. When she saw the flashing "walk" sign, she hurried across the street and continued on until she came to the place she was looking for. It was the library. She carried Wiskers up the walk and into the building and then Peyton paused at the front desk and signed her name and Wisker's name too. Suddenly, Wiskers, hearing all the strange noises around him, sat up and opened his eyes. When his eyes had adjusted to all the lights he saw that there were lots and lots of people everywhere. They were laughing and talking and he wasn't too sure what was going on. Peyton reached down and lifted Wiskers out of the basket. "Wiskers, you are going to be in a Cat Show," she announced. "A Cat Show, what's a Cat Show?" thought Wiskers. "I know I'm a cat but what's a Cat Show?" Peyton plunked Wiskers down on the table in front of her and then she looked at him. "I think that you are the most beautiful cat in the whole wide world, Wiskers," she said. "But I need to do a few things to you before the judging begins." With that, she pulled a brush out of the basket and began brushing Wiskers like he'd never been brushed before. She combed, she brushed, she pulled, she tugged, she sprayed, she cut and finally she was through. She held a small mirror in front of Wiskers and said, "There Wiskers, I'm all finished. What do you think?" Wiskers couldn't believe his eyes. He blinked and the cat in the mirror blinked. He turned his head this way and that and the kitten in the mirror did too. Wiskers stuck out his little pink tongue and so did the other kitten. Wiskers almost didn't recognize himself. His hair stood up in all directions and he was very fluffy. "Oh me, oh my," thought Wiskers. "It's me! It really is me!" He couldn't believe it. He had never looked so splendiferous in his whole entire life! "Now Wiskers, I want everyone here to know that not only do I have the most beautiful kitten in the world, but I have the most well-behaved kitten here too. The only thing you have to do is to lie here and let everyone look at you." With that, Peyton laid Wiskers down on a soft yellow blanket and then she said, "Wiskers, I have to go see a few of my friends. Now be a good boy and stay right here and I'll be right back." And Peyton hurried off. Wiskers lay where she had put him for the longest while and still Peyton didn't come back. Then, Wiskers became bored, he became very, very bored. He sat up and looked all around. "Maybe she got lost. Perhaps I should go and find her," he thought to himself. He pulled himself up and looked this way and that but still he couldn't see Peyton. "I'll just walk a little ways and see if I can find her," he thought to himself as he jumped out of the basket and down off the table. He looked right and he looked left and all he saw were crowds of people. "I guess that I'll go this way," he thought to himself and he turned left. Wiskers had only walked a short distance and then he stopped. Lying in front of him on another table was a beautiful creature, something he'd never seen before. He walked a little closer and the creature raised its head and looked at him. "Who are you?" Wiskers asked. "I'm Simmy the Siamese. I'm a cat." replied the wonderful creature. "Why I'm a cat too," said Wiskers. Simmy looked at him for a moment, "So I see," she replied. "But I'm from a land far, far away." And with that, the lovely creature turned her head and closed her beautiful eyes. "What is this place?" Wiskers asked. Simmy opened one large, golden eye and looked at him and in a very bored voice replied, "It's a Cat Show, silly." Wiskers finally understood. He was a cat and he was in a Cat Show. He walked on to the next table and there he found two tiny kittens. They were round and fluffy and their fur was very different from his. Their fur was long and soft and it was nearly blue. He walked up to them and announced, "I'm a cat and I'm in a Cat Show!" The two kittens looked at him and laughed. Wiskers looked at the sign on the table in front of them and it said, "Blue Persian Kittens." Wiskers walked on and on and he saw sights that he'd never seen before. There were cats everywhere he looked. There were more cats than he could count. There were fat cats and tall cats, short cats and small cats. There were brown cats and black cats, yellow cats and gray cats, striped cats and spotted cats. He had never known that so many different creatures existed in the cat family. Wiskers hurried from table to table, anxious to see what the next cat looked like. Finally, he came to the last table and there was the most beautiful cat lying there. Wiskers looked at the cat and noticed that it had large blue eyes and its fur was very white. Its tiny feet were curled up on the rug and it held its long tail high over its back in a big curl. Wiskers tore his eyes away from the beautiful creature and read the name on the table. It said," Minny, the Maine Coon Cat." Suddenly, Wiskers heard Peyton's voice behind him. "Wiskers, you bad kitten. I've been looking everywhere for you. The judging is about to start." She picked Wiskers up and then she looked at the other cat. "Did you notice that this cat is the same as you?" she asked Wiskers. Wiskers looked at the lovely creature. "The same as me?" he thought. "Oh, she's so beautiful! Why I must be a Maine Coon Cat too!" Peyton carried Wiskers back to their table just in time for the judging to begin. Wiskers didn't win first prize but he did win "Honorable Mention" and Peyton was very proud of him. Wiskers learned a lot that day, he learned that he belonged to a very large family from all around the world and that family was the cat family.
