From Magic City Morning Star M Stevens-David
We "Americans" are really the "golden people." We have so much of everything that we are envied the world over. We have so much that we throw away more than we, as a people, can ever use. We go on planning ways to improve our society year after year and we are not content with what we now have, we seem consumed by an insatiable hunger to be "first," or "bigger," or "better," than everyone else. When the "colonists" left England to come to these shores of America, they came for many reasons but the chief one was to be allowed to worship as they chose. What factors caused them to forget our simple needs and lifestyles and turned us into what we are today? We no longer want the simple things in life. We want bigger cars, larger houses, more money. Two people live in houses that have four bedrooms, three baths, and formal and informal living rooms. When we chance to meet a simple man who laughs at our values and expresses no desire to embrace our greedy lifestyles, we immediately reject him and look at him with suspicion and distrust. It has been said that in order for man to exist, he must have a dream. In the beginning, we, Americans, had a dream. We dreamed to come to a new world to live in peace and harmony. Then, because of man's dreams, we had cars, trains, planes and televisions. And now we have space stations, men on the moon, and space shuttles galore. Do we even dare to dream anymore? Are we wise enough to even know when we have the best? It seems that when we have something "good," we then must try to make it "better," and then our ultimate goal is to strive to achieve the "best." Somehow, I doubt that we will ever recognize when we have the best. Perhaps we never will.
