NEWS UPDATE - This visit has been cancelled

BANGOR, ME -- Today, Congressman Mike Michaud, Ranking Member of the Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Health, announced that Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will travel to East Millinocket and Millinocket on September 2nd to commemorate Navy Cross recipient Stephen W. Groves and to celebrate the naming of the future United States Naval Ship (USNS) Millinocket.

"I look forward to welcoming Secretary Mabus to the Katahdin region," said Michaud. "Maine is home to many dedicated servicemembers and veterans, and we're honored to have the Navy recognize the contributions that so many in this region have made to our county."

Mabus will present the town of East Millinocket with the builder's plaque from the former USS Stephen W. Groves (FFG 29), a guided-missile frigate that was decommissioned in February. FFG-29 was named for Ensign Stephen Groves, a naval pilot from East Millinocket, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for actions he and his wingman took to destroy two Japanese bombers on June 4, 1942. Their heroism disrupted an attack on USS Yorktown which allowed the carrier to fulfill its mission and ultimately contribute to the victory of the Battle of Midway. The plaque will be on loan to East Millinocket for a period of up to three years.

Additionally, Mabus will host a ship naming ceremony in honor of the joint high speed vessel (JHSV) USNS Millinocket. JHSVs are high-speed transport vessels that will serve in a variety of roles for the military branches in support of overseas contingency operations, conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and supporting special operations forces. USNS Millinocket will have a flight deck that supports day and night air vehicle launch and recovery operations and can operate in shallow-draft ports and waterways. More information about joint high speed vessels can be found here.
