On March 16th here at Magic City Morning Star News in the Entertainment section, an article entitled: Growing up without a cell phone! was published. One of our readers forwarded the article on to various friends, one of whom sent in this letter. To appreciate the comments better, you might want to read the original article first. R. P. BenDedek

I read this article in a FWD email and responded with some funny antidotes of my own. I thought you might be interested.

  • Those were the radical, awesome totally tubular days that were the 80's and 90's of my childhood! Cowabunga!! I will save this email forever and exactly one day.

My comments are made as I read this article, section by section:

[walking twenty-five miles to school Barefoot]

We didn't have to walk barefoot but Kmart shoes in that day were comparable to walking barefoot!

[we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves]

Hahaha Card Catalogs and Encyclopedias....hey I rented that book exactly a month ago today...there's my signature and date and everything!!!...... yep yep haha I wanted a damn set of encyclopedias so bad when I was a kid..KNOWLEDGE!! Cuz knowledge is Power!!

[We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen!]

I thought writing letters was cool when I was a kid me and my friends did that sometimes...lick the stamp!! ha!

[Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us.]

Belts and switches yep I remember a few instances of extreme pain and bloodshed....I had to have an ass implant when I turned 16...kidding

[If you wanted to steal music, you had to shoplift it yourself!]

Shoplifting is bad, mmmmmkkkkk?!?!?

[And we didn't have microwaves.]

Hell I had to wait until supper at 6 pm to actually get hot food!!! Sandwiches all day, Steak Monday nights, Taco Tuesdays, Chicken Wednesdays, repeat the cycle mmmmmk???

[We had tape decks in our car.]

I used to have so many self made mix tapes.. Hell yeah Yeehaw Brooks and Dunn Alan Jackson Garth brooks..What an eclectic taste in music I had.. I never touched a sheep in my life.. alright there was one time in Phoenix.. but seriously living twenty miles in the middle of nowhere's asshole in a beautiful place called Trapp really narrowed the amount of music you were aware of.. and black people.

Anyone remember tape head cleaners? Those things were a bitch! You had to squirt the little eyedrops thing in the little tape head cleaner hole.. that's kinda sexual in a really weird way.. dirty thoughts.. I've just impregnated this little Tape Head Cleaner with the Blue Tape in it haha

[the tape would come undone rendering it useless.]

Yeah when that tape breaks you are screwed MANNNNN!!!!!

[There weren't any freakin' cell phones either.]

I actually remember using a damn rotary phone!! Dgdg- 7 - dgdg- 4 -dgdg- 4 - dgdg- 6 -dgdg- 7 -dgdg- 8 -dgdg- 9 - hahaha laughing my ass off right now.. anyone up for Chutes and Ladders and Bible Study??

[And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!]

Yes there was actually a fear and a trepidation involved with picking up the phone.. like WHO THE HELL IS CALLING ME OH NO! And no way to keep Telemarketers from calling you.. you were just SOL

[We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games]

Old skool Black and White Gameboy.. break out the magnifying glasses.. hard on the old eyes to see little black and white Mario.. NES.. shoot them ducks yo!!!.. But SNES Super Mario World will always be my favorite video game.. Christmas 91.. THE Xmas gift of my Childhood! ..just like the Red Ryder BB Gun for that big eyed kid in A Christmas Story..

[You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!]

Alright this is funny. I WAS the remote for my family! We had a floor model Magnavox.. looked like a damn wicker cabinet hahahah and yep I was the official knob turner up there flipping through our grand total of 4 CHANNNELS haha... that was on a good day with the channel lock in fine condition and making excellent contact with the rusty huge ass antenna outside!!! hahahah When I plugged the above mentioned SNES up to above mentioned Floor Model Magnavox it created the prettiest display of technological explosion I had ever seen at that time.. pretty rainbow X's ran thru the TV AND IT WAS NO MORE!! Seriously we had to buy a new TV it could not handle the 16 bit technology monster that was the SNES.. and we had a damn 20 year old VCR.. Oh boy that thing was about the size of our back porch.. huge metal beast of technology.. I'm rambling..

[There was no Cartoon Network either!]

I had to go to my sister Cynthias to watch the really good cartoons contained on the Fox Network.

[And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. if you came back inside... you were doing chores!]

I loved to mow our 4 acres.. I ate that stuff up!! Bring on the chores... Allowance?? What the hell is an allowance??.. HELL allowance was Dad ALLOWINCING me to live under his roof and eat his food haha

Those were the radical, awesome totally tubular days that were the 80's and 90's of my childhood! Cowabunga!! I will save this email forever and exactly one day.
