Everyone comes out with a spin that they have been fed since the Trudeau era about the Kebecois, Canadien and Acadien being French, when that was not the case at all during the time when New France was settled and its intendants who ran its trading enterprises were ordered to by the King and his First Minister, usually a Cardinal to force Frenchmen who were single to take Amerindian women as wives. This was done on a very large scale during the reign of Louis XIV also known as the Sun King. Thus this new hybrid was created to quickly raise the population of New France to compete with Britain's New England colonies where the population was burgeoning. But this melding of two very different cultures did not bode well for the colony of New France, because the French upper class and the artisans who did the architectural work and the building of Kebec and Old Montreal did not accept these Franco-Amerindians as equals but only as menials and as the servant class of the colony.
By the time the surrender of New France took place on September 8, 1760, by French Governor Vaudreuil to British General Jeffrey Amherst at Montreal, this population of Franco-Amerindians had grown and France now rejected them, because of their mixed race, thus 66,000 of them who could not get to France or to other French colonies like Louisiana without any help by the French government were abandoned and left to their own devices. But the "Treaty of Paris" signed on February 10, 1763 give them the choice of becoming British subjects if they still wished to stay in the former colony of New France, now under British rule and now called Kebec. The 66,000 opted to stay on in the British colony of Kebec and become British subjects after taking an OATH of allegiance to His Majesty George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland, France and the Netherlands. But in essence these people were never considered French even by the king of France, since they were really Franco-Amerindians, but were nevertheless permitted by Britain to stay on in their colony of Kebec.
We have to clearly understand that even the French Governor Vaudreuil was considered French, even though he was born in New France because both his parents were French, and after he surrendered all the territory of France in North America to Great Britain in September 1760, he returned to France as a Frenchman. But, the 66,000 Franco-Amerindians did not have the same rights as Governor Vaudreuil, because he was indeed a Frenchman.
The best part of this story is that Franco-Amerindians somehow thought that they could pull a fast one, by calling themselves French-Canadian and French, neither of which can be proven to be historically true. But, fairy tales written by men like Pierre Trudeau, Rene Levesque et al, was only based on conjecture and totally avoided the reality of history. Thus, this is the very reason that a few years ago some Franco-Amerindians (Kebecois) who demanded that France give them citizenship were denied it, as they could not even furnish documentary evidence to back up their spurious claims.
