This week I signed LD 2015, what has come to be known as “the Katahdin Lake bill”. This legislation clears the way for the completion of Governor Percival P. Baxter’s dream of including Katahdin Lake in Baxter State Park.

John Baldacci Supplementary Budget
Members of the Legislature gave overwhelming approval to a 2 year supplemental budget with strong bipartisan support. The achievement is noteworthy not only because the budget fills a significant number of gaps created by reduced funding from Washington, but also because Legislators were able to set aside partisan differences – often not easy in an election year – and pass a budget that meets our obligations to Maine citizens in a sound, fiscally responsible manner.

John Baldacci Continuing the Promise of Dirigo Health Reform
As I travel our state I hear stories from families and small businesses - working hard to grow and prosper. These are your neighbors and friends - the business owner who struggles with the decision of whether she can provide health insurance for her employees; the mom who’s scared to death to let her children participate in sports, knowing a broken arm could break the family budget. It is time to take steps now to expand Dirigo and to ensure all Maine people will have the security of health coverage.

Last year, by a large partisan vote, the Legislature passed LD 1. Its goal: to increase state aid to education, limit government spending and reduce property taxes. Two independent economists recently reflected that progress.
