The Women in Green movement bows its head in mourning upon the death of retired Supreme Court Justice Edmund Levy, and joins in the private mourning of his family and the general sorrow of the people of Israel at the passing of one of the elect of the people.
The Women in Green movement deemed Justice Levy's sober and balanced judicial opinion as charting the way for the entire legal system. With his humility, integrity, and seeking truth, Justice Levy erected milestones for the way in which the justice system should look in the State of Israel.
Justice Levy did not allow the drafts that struck, and continue to strike, Israeli society to divert him from the truth in which he believed and championed, the truth in which the love of the people of Israel, the State of Israel, and the Land of Israel is not detached from justice and legal integrity. By standing alone against the laws of uprooting and expulsion from Gush Katif, Justice Levy became the sole beacon of light in a dark and crushing period. In the report that he issued at the Prime Minister's request on the legal and judicial standing of the State of Israel in Judea and Samaria, he showed, through a profound study of international law, the legal justification of our possession of Eretz Israel.
The call that arises from the profound report authored by Justice Levy does not fear the fixed, shallow international positions that never examined in depth the question of the right to Eretz Israel. Justice Levy taught all of us to say things as they are, without fear and without taking into account the manifestations of obsequiousness, lack of self-esteem, and political capitulation that have no moral, national, Jewish, or legal justification.
The heads of Women in Green, Yehudit Katsover and Nadia Matar, call upon the Israeli government, its ministers and its head, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to take action for the speedy implementation of the Levy Report, and thereby erect a fitting monument for this outstanding individual in Israeli political history.
