AUGUSTA, MAINE -- As the April 15 tax deadline approaches, the IRS reminds people who work but don't earn a lot of money that they may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. This credit is even more important this year as more workers may qualify because their incomes were reduced last year.
The amount of the EITC is determined by income and family size. The average EITC amount is $2,000 and could be as much as $4,824.
Each year, millions of people fail to claim EITC. People who live in rural areas, people with disabilities, older Americans raising grandchildren, childless workers and people who normally don't have a filing requirement are among those who often miss out.
Free tax help also is available. IRS community partners operate local free tax preparation sites in all states. Locations are available by calling 211 or 1-800-906-9887. Eligibility details are available at www.irs.gov/eitc.
