The Maine Archeology Society, founded in 1956, is the statewide organization for anyone with an interest in Maine archaeology. Its membership includes amateur and professional archaeologists and people who just want to learn more about the subject.
The M.A.S focuses on what life was like in Maine in 1650 A.D. to 10,000 years ago which encompasses prehistoric Native American campsites, colonial villages, forts, and even shipwrecks. The M.A.S. encourages anyone with an interest in these areas to visit their website at www.mainearchsociety.org and learn how they can become a member.
The Abbe Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the Wabanaki, the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac and Maliseet people of Maine and the Maritimes. The museum’s mission is to preserve the Wabanaki past and celebrate their vibrant and enterprising present. The Abbe has a collection of over 50,000 archeological, historic and contemporary objects including stone and bone tools, pottery, beadwork, carved root clubs, birch bark canoes, and supporting collections of photographs, maps, and archival documents.
