From Route 3 leading into Bar Harbor, the Porcupine Islands are features of Frenchman's Bay on an early morning. When the French and British were squabbling over which nation would control the Colonies, French ships anchored in Frenchman's Bay while English ships stayed in Southwest Harbor and Somes Sound across the mountains on the other side of Mount Desert Island.
