Watercolor c. 1947 by Latvian Refugee Leo Trinkuns (1899-1948) who died while living at Insula.

These watercolor paintings by Leo Trinkuns (1899-1948) who died while living at Insula. He was among the millions of refugees from Eastern and Central Europe who were left stranded in a Germany defeated and devastated by the end of World War II. Those at Insula all started from different places and conditions in Latvia. Fate brought them all together taking residence in the same refugee camp in the Bavarian Alps. Their elders called the place Insula-- the Latin for island, for it became an island of Latvian life among the local Germans, the occupying Americans and all the other nationalities of stranded refugees.
