Some historical features of the Blackall Range

  • The Glasshouse Mountains were formed by volcanic activity some 25 million years ago.Aborigines are believed to have been in the area for 40,000 years. The Wapa and Kabi tribes gathered around Baroon Pocket every two or three years for a Bonyi Bonyi gathering which included a Bunya nut festival. These gatherings were a time of celebration when they exchanged songs, stories, tools and ornaments, arranged marriages, and resolved conflicts.

European settlers arrived in the early 1840's, initially to gather timber, especially the prized red cedar.Shutes were used to slide timber down the range to waiting bullock teams that hauled them to sawmills. Evidence of these can be seen in the use of street names using the term shute, eg: McCarthy Shute Road, Landershute and Remingtons.Maleny was named after the village Maleny which is south-west of Edinburgh. Montville was named after a district in Connecticut, USA where an earlier settler lived before coming to Australia.Mapleton saw its first European settlers in 1888. Maleny first appeared in the Post Office directory of 1892/3 and neighbouring Teutoberg (later changed to Witta) in 1896/7. Once land was cleared, other industries followed, including box making, dairying, and the growing of crops such as citrus, macadamias and avocados.
