SEARSPORT -- The Penobscot Marine Museum will host their first benefit Book Sale March 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Douglas and Margaret Carver Memorial Art Gallery (11 Church Street, Searsport, Maine). The Museum will also hold a special early bird sale the night before, Friday, March 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. which is free for all members and $15 for non-members. All proceeds benefit the Penobscot Marine Museum.
The sale will feature new books, both in print and out of print, as well as numerous used books. The majority of the books are maritime related. There are historical books of all kinds on topics ranging from Maine specific to pirates and the Titanic. Older cruising guides for local areas, but also ones for places in Europe - about which we dream. There are how to books on building and sailing with a classic emphasis, but plenty to interest a modern sailor. Practical books on medicine and cooking at sea. For the small boat enthusiast, there are books on building small boats, along with books on canoeing and kayaking. There is also some general Maine history and genealogy.
Above and beyond, the sale will also include rare, one-of-a-kind graphics and posters made for various Penobscot Marine Museum exhibits ranging from Pirates to the China trade. Including picture frames suited for paper and photographs.

The Penobscot Marine Museum was founded in 1936 and is Maine's oldest maritime museum. Its Searsport grounds comprise 13 historic buildings, including ship captains' residences, an early town hall, and a commercial structure. Eight of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, and together they represent Searsport when it was a bustling port during the Age of Sail. Inside the historic structures - artifacts, exhibits, and interpreters tell the stories of Maine's seafaring past.
The Penobscot Marine Museum is located at U.S. Highway 1 and Church Street in Searsport, between Bucksport and Belfast. The museum is currently closed and will re-open May 24, 2008. Special programs and events are held year round.
