EASTON, Mass. -- On April 21, 2015, Father Wilfred Raymond, C.S.C., President of Holy Cross Family Ministries; Father David S. Marcham, Vice Postulator of the Cause for Sainthood of Servant of God Patrick Peyton; and Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, the Postulator of the Cause for Sainthood for Servant of God Patrick Peyton, together with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, Philippines, presented the Positio (Position Document) on the life and holiness of Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C. to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome, Italy.
The Positio is the result of a four-year study of Father Peyton's life and ministry. It is the synthesis of the 6,000-page report completed by the tribunals in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and 34 other dioceses around the world.
"We are very pleased to see progress in Father Peyton's Cause," said Father Willy Raymond, C.S.C. "Many people regularly tell me we need a 'Saint for Families' and that Father Peyton is the appropriate candidate."
"We honor Father Peyton's memory by bringing families together to pray, especially the Rosary. We continue to fulfill his vision by sharing his strong belief with families around the world that the family that prays together stays together."
Holy Cross Father Patrick Peyton, Catholic media pioneer, spent the 51 years of his priesthood (1941-1992) serving the spiritual needs of families, particularly encouraging them to pray together daily, especially the Rosary. He believed, as his famous motto reflects, that "The family that prays together stays together" and "A world at prayer is a world at peace." Father Peyton was known worldwide as, "The Rosary Priest."
After immigrating to the United States from Ireland in 1928 at age 19, eventually becoming a Holy Cross seminarian and miraculously surviving tuberculosis and being ordained in 1941, Father Peyton founded Family Rosary in Albany, N.Y., in 1942. He conducted Rosary crusades in 40 countries that drew 28 million people, including 2 million each at events in Brazil and the Philippines.
He founded Family Theater Productions, which he created in Hollywood in 1947, he produced 600 radio and TV programs that featured hundreds of star actors and other celebrities and had more than 10,000 broadcasts. The ministry has grown from radio and television to embrace the internet spreading Father Peyton's messages through all forms of social media, including more than two million minutes of video viewed on YouTube last year, as well as more than one million daily prayers via email and text.
Family Rosary and Family Theater Productions are members of Holy Cross Family Ministries, which serves families in 17 countries. The Father Peyton Family Institutes, based in Lima, Peru, and in Bangalore, India, provide education and resources to enrich the spirituality of families. The ministries are all under the sponsorship of the Congregation of Holy Cross, at whose request Father Peyton's Cause for Canonization was opened in June of 2001.
