Milt Gross Book Review: "The Bazaar of Bad Dreams" by Stephen King

This thick Stephen King book, Bazaar of Bad Dreams, was okay. His short stories seemed long to me. Sometimes I did not understand the last sentence, which I suppose is a punch line. "Cool isn't it," King wrote as part of an authors note. Milt Gross photo.
Bazaar of Bad Dreams is the strangest Stephen King book I've ever read, all 495 pages. Most of these "short" stories I thought were good. Some were too strange for my tired old mind.

"Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story," states the front cover.

Also from the front cover, "Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, the stories in The Bazaar of Bad Dreams comprise one of King's finest gifts to his Constant Reader -- 'I made them especially for you,' says King. 'Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth,'"

I found his introductory notes to each story interesting, and at times explaining the story to some degree.

This is not my favorite Stephen King tale, and, to be honest, I'm not sure which one was. But it was a full-length book. I recall waking on our late-night sofa after reading one of them and feeling, well, kind of spooked. Which I would guess was King's intention.

One of the stories I think I recognized as roughly following a real-life incident, King's being hit by a car in western Maine.

The book was published in 2015 by Scribner, New York, and copyrighted, also last year, by King. Scribner is an "imprint" of Simon and Schuster, Inc.

You can't borrow my copy, because I got it from our local library, and I'm pretty sure they'd like me to return it.

P.S. It's also the heaviest of King's books I've ever hefted.
