In this novel, "A Year in the Village," author Petra Langa, takes the reader from post-war Germany to South Africa and on to China.
Petra Langa is a German freelance writer who lives in South Africa. The publicity material for the book tells us that she channels her real-life into her story. As the wife of the former Ambassador of South Africa to China she has some particular insights into how migration to and life in foreign countries affects and changes one's life.
This short story tells of the friendship of two young girls, Lisa and Eva and the different paths their lives have taken over the years. After years of separation, upon rediscovering each other, the two friends find that they still have much in common and Lisa sets out to help Eva gain control over her addiction to men, financial difficulties and alcohol.
And in the rekindled friendship between the now mature women, Lisa discovers that she too, has many unanswered questions about her own childhood and family.
This story was well-written and I enjoyed the hint of mystery that this novel offered. Well-done.
